Things to do and places to go with your dog

Dougal, my labradoodle, in the garden

Things to do at Ardnageena

If your dog is a friendly sort, he or she is welcome to play with Dougal. I have a few pieces of agility equipment and a doggy paddling pool. There is also a nice big garden to run around in, as long as you're happy to let them off the lead.

Walkies

There are lots of walks to go on from Ardnageena on foot. Dunmanus Bay is about 10-15 minutes away. No matter which direction you take, you'll find something beautiful to look at. Other country walks:

  • Glengariff Nature Reserve - is picturesque, free, and open all year. Dogs need to be kept under control so the wildlife isn't disturbed (chased/eaten). The views from Lady Bantry's Lookout are breathtaking and not just because it is quite a climb to get up there.
  • Gougane Barra - this is a Coillte Forest Park. There is a EUR5 fee for the car park, payable in coins on entry. It is, in my opinion anyway, very lovely and magical. Dougal enjoys splashing and swimming in the streams and the views are gorgeous. Sheep have been spotted so be careful with your dog.

Most of the beaches on Sheep's Head are pebbly but if you want sand, there are two amazing beaches to go to for a day trip. One is Barleycove on Mizen Head. O'Sullivans in nearby Crookhaven has an excellent reputation for crab sandwiches. The other beach is Inchydoney, near Clonakilty. It's best to find out when low tide is to get the most space for ball chasing and the like.

Day trips

  • Garinish Island is great fun. You do need to get there by boat - which is no small part of the excitement - but not to be attempted if your dog might decide to take a swim! Once on the island, there is a nice walk through the gardens but I'm pretty sure dogs aren't allowed in the house. Probably best for all concerned

Local pubs

The Tin Pub and Eileen's don't have an official policy on dogs, as far as I can tell. However, I've taken Dougal to both on quiet nights and it's been fine. I've always checked on the night so it's probably best for you to do the same.
